Standard vs. Specialty Contact Lenses: What’s the Difference?

Both standard and specialty contact lenses require a thorough contact lens exam to determine your prescription, separate from a routine eye exam.

What sets specialty lenses apart is their ability to address specific eye conditions or cater to personal preferences. Whether you have astigmatism, dry eye, keratoconus, or want to enhance your vision, our team can help you find a comfortable solution that meets your needs.

Why Is A Contact Lens Exam Important?

A contact lens exam is more than just a routine eye check. It thoroughly evaluates your eyes’ unique characteristics, including shape, curvature, and tear production. This valuable information helps us customize your fit and prescription and identify any comfort challenges, like dry eyes.

We’ll discuss your lifestyle and daily screentime habits to understand what lens types can enhance your vision and support your eye health. This information helps us determine the most suitable contact lens type and fit for your needs.

What to Expect During Your Contact Lens Exam

Here’s what you can expect from your contact lens exam at Fenix Lumi Optometry:

  • Comprehensive Eye Exam: Our team will conduct a thorough eye exam to assess your vision, eye health, and any underlying conditions.
  • Contact Lens Fitting: We’ll use Lumenis Antares corneal topographer and dry eye diagnostic to help capture custom measurements and provide a personalized fitting.
  • Education & Guidance: Our team will educate you on proper contact lens care, insertion, and removal techniques to help improve your comfort and safety.

Customized Contact Lenses for Your Vision Needs

Fenix Lumi Optometry offers a wide range of contact lenses to suit your needs, whether you have astigmatism, dry eye, or have struggled to find a good fit in the past. Our experienced team is committed to finding the right solution for you.

We aim to empower our patients with knowledge, educating you on the benefits of each lens type and collaborating closely to find the perfect fit. Let’s explore how specialty contact lenses can enhance your lifestyle together.

Scleral Lenses

Scleral contact lenses are custom-made, large-diameter lenses that vault over the cornea, creating a layer of moisture between the lens and the eye’s surface. They are often used for conditions like dry eye, corneal irregularities, or post-surgical recovery.

Toric contact lenses are designed to help correct astigmatism, a common eye condition where the cornea is not perfectly spherical. Depending on the eye’s shape, astigmatism can cause blurry distance or close-up vision.

Toric lenses have a specific curvature to counteract the irregular shape of the cornea.

Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses are made from a breathable material that allows oxygen to pass through to the cornea. They can offer sharper vision correction and are often used for conditions like astigmatism, keratoconus, or irregular corneas.

MiSight 1-day lenses are soft, daily disposable lenses designed to help slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children. Myopia can worsen throughout a child’s growing years into early adulthood and increase the risk of sight-threatening eye conditions later in life.

Multifocal Lenses

Multifocal lenses feature multiple focusing powers, essentially combining 2 prescriptions in 1 lens. Bifocals and progressive lenses are types of multifocal lenses that correct both nearsightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia), often for those with presbyopia (age-related vision loss).

Multifocal lenses designed for myopia control can correct nearsightedness and help prevent signals contributing to myopia progression.

Transform your look and enhance your style with color contact lenses. Whether you want a subtle enhancement or a bold new eye color, these lenses offer the perfect way to express your individuality.

Available with or without prescription, color contacts are designed for comfort and safety while giving you the flexibility to experiment with your appearance.

Monovision—or blended vision—involves correcting one eye to improve distance vision and the other for near vision. The contact lens for your left eye will have a different prescription than the lens for your right eye. This technique can be an option for people with cataracts or presbyopia.
